Women’s weight unfairly scrutinized

Society puts more pressure on women.

The photos in this article are of me five pounds heavier than I am today.  My body mass index is currently 23.4.  That means I am on the higher end of normal weight.  Yet often I am made to feel as though I am a very large woman.  People say that I am fat behind my back, and some even have the nerve to tell me that I am overweight right to my face.

Now I know that I am not currently in the best shape of my life.  In fact, I have been in the process of trying to slim down and tone up even prior to all of this scrutiny about the size of my body.  However, I do not feel that my body size is anything so extreme that it would garner so much attention from people.  I mean, one person even suggested that I try diet pills!

As a marathon runner, I live a very active lifestyle.  My last doctor visit also proved that I am very healthy.  Therefore, weight loss for me would only be for cosmetic reason.  If my life was in danger due to my weight, I would thank the person calling my attention to the weight problem.

However, being that it is only a cosmetic issue, I am rather appalled by it all.  The thing that annoys me the most though is the fact that men who are of the same body mass index as me never have to endure such scrutiny from others.  How do I know this?  Because they are in the same room as I when others are talking about my weight, yet no one says anything about them needing to lose weight.
