Is Anyone Really Like Demi Moore's Character in Disclosure?

Add Comment

Disclosure, which is one of the many steamy films Michael Douglas starred in the early 90‘s, is one of the first films to portray reverse sexual harassment from the reverse perspective.

The plot centers around an incident between Michael Douglas (Tom) and Demi Moore (Meredith) . The two are former lovers who re-connect in a “meeting”- their circumstances have entirely
DisclosureDisclosurechanged- she is now his boss and he now has a family.  After Tom stops a hot and heavy sexual encounter from progressing any further, both of them turn to the courts to find a settlement.

Emergency Pads for Women in Haiti

Add Comment

We tend to take a lot of things for granted in the United States. Yes, we all have our problems; but most of us do have clean running water, shelter, clothing, and food. Most of us women have access to sanitary napkins and tampons, too. In Haiti, however, there is a different story.

Women in Haiti are experiencing a severe shortage of feminine hygiene products since the earthquake—especially during the postpartum period, when they are often needed just as much as they are during the menstrual cycle. Women’s periods don’t exactly make the news, but we call all appreciate what it’s like to be caught off guard without protection—though most of us have been able to remedy the situation quickly after it occurs. Imagine not being able to grab a pad or tampon and to just experience the bleeding without anything. It’s likely even more awful than it sounds.

The Mind-Body Connection: Part I

Add Comment

Earlier this week, I experienced a rare moment of epiphany—which has left me with some problems to solve. Though certainly grateful for the amazing realization (which should have seemed obvious to me—don’t we all look at our epiphanies and think, “Why didn’t I already know this?” Maybe we did but we just couldn’t admit it to ourselves…), I now feel like I need some help in acting on it. Maybe you have the answer I need.

STFU, Phyllis Schlafly

Add Comment

Phyllis Schlafly's latest political ambition is to badmouth a pretty easy target: single moms. Any woman who is against feminism is already highly suspect in my book—especially one who is an attorney and an author, a fact that wouldn’t be possible without feminism; but as a mother with six kids, you’d think Schlafly could have some human decency when it comes to mothers working alone to support their children.

Not a chance.

Schlafly is raising hell about women voting for Obama because they’re single and wanting government assistance. “70% of unmarried women voted for Obama. And this is because when you kick your husband out, you’ve got to have Big Brother government as your provider.”

"Bright-Sided" Not As Bright As Hoped, But Still Shiny

Add Comment

I had pretty high hopes for this book, and I have to admit that they didn't all get met.  But this is a solid book on its own, even if it didn't fulfill my every expectation.  Subtitled "How Positive Thinking is Undermining America," it only partly made this case.  I wanted so much more!

This book breaks down into three basic parts.  The first part is an expansion on Ehrenreich's inimitable essay, "Welcome to Cancerland."  This essay is one of my favorite works of short non-fiction writing, and has been for many years.  I keep a link to it handy, and pass it out whenever it's even remotely appropriate.

Fiction Runs On Dead Naked Ladies

Add Comment

Have you ever noticed the preponderance of dead naked ladies in fiction?  I'm talking television, movies, books, graphic novels, the whole shebang.  If it's aimed at adults, it probably has a dead naked lady in it.  This goes extra for any work of mystery or suspense.

Just as a random example, where would CSI and all its clones be without dead naked ladies?  I wonder what CSI: Miami would look like, if its producers decided to challenge the writing staff by banning dead naked ladies from the scripts.

I began pondering this recently as I was reading Stieg Larsson's runaway global bestseller The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.  What started out as a fairly intriguing mystery at one point (not to give anything away) suddenly devolves into a collection of dead naked ladies.  How disappointing.

Horrors of "The View"

Add Comment

I've faced some terrifying things in my lifetime. I've stood in front of hundreds of thousands of people who expected me to impress them. I've spoken to every person in the entire world at the same time. I've seen a viscous poison eat away at my nation's waters and I've seen a whole country turned into a stone age hell after a single, catastrophic earthquake. My presidency has not been an easy one but I've soldiered forth. I am not ashamed to say that the only moment I ever considered running from my responsibilities was earlier today, surrounded by the nightmarish banshees who run ABC's daytime talk show The View.

Are People Meant to Be Monogamous?

Add Comment

Chimpanzee LoveChimpanzee LoveIs monogamy the natural way for couples to live? I truthfully don’t know, but Psychologist Christopher Ryan doesn’t think so. He claims that in the past days of the hunter-gatherer, everything was shared because of the close proximity in which people lived. When the idea of personal property came into being, the idea of monogamy gained importance along with the eventual biblical ideas of not coveting another’s wife.  Christopher Ryan believes that agriculture and personal property also led to the belief that women were more likely to seen as property than as individuals contributing to society.
