I'm back from vacation!

Great AmericaGreat AmericaWhere have I been?  Out of town.  We brought our daughter's laptop computer, as it's the newest one in the house, not knowing we couldn't post messages from it.  I'm sure if we had taken time to sit down and figure out why, we could have solved the problem.  But we didn't have time to mess with the computer.

We headed down to a place called Angels Camp, CA, just southeast of Sacramento.  My sweet cousin and her husband let us use their timeshare and it was wonderful!  Did I do well at staying on my eating plan?  Well, yes, and no.

An Old Fashioned Girl

Add Comment

August 1964 was brutal. I'd say I don't know why it sticks out in my memory, but that'd be a lie. My cousin Phillip, bird-brained kid that he was, went and got himself shot over in Vietnam. 17 years old and eager enough to leave home to lie about his age. I was in Richmond helping the cigarette people update their phone system. It was a mess, some glorified closet full of girls at switchboards barely able to see from all the smoke. My first recommendation was "ventilation". I never smoked myself (a topic I skirted during that entire gig) and I've always hated to see a pretty girl puffing away. Some folks think it's alluring, but me, I think it takes away some of the magic. I guess it's because you already know how she's gonna smell. That's why the girl at the hotel bar that last rainy Thursday night caught my eye. It was a room full of flaming tobacco but she hadn't lit up all night. After an hour of nursing this and that, I drank my last ounce of courage, picked up my suitcase and grabbed the seat next to her.

Help End Obstetric Fistula

Add Comment

I never knew what obstetric fistula was until The Breast Cancer Site started to run a campaign to help women with this terrifying condition. In fact, I’d never heard of the disease, period. Obstetric fistula, for anyone else who is unfamiliar with the condition, is the development of a fistula, or hole, between the rectum and vagina or the bladder and the vagina. It can happen after a woman undergoes a very hard childbirth. Poorly orchestrated abortions, female genital mutilation, and pelvic fractures may also cause the condition.

Congo Rape Crisis

Add Comment

Here's something that makes me lose all faith in humanity.  Recently in the Congo, "rape capital of the world," 200 women and four baby boys were gang raped over the course of four days within miles of a United Nations peacekeeping base.

It's easy sometimes, being a woman living in the west, to get caught up in the minutia of everyday life.  In discussions over what is and is not misogynist, over problems like the sorry state of women in the high tech world.  Why aren't there more women in tech?  Why do girls suddenly start losing interest in math and science at around age 11?

Manny Howard, "My Empire of Dirt"

Add Comment

I stopped reading after he bludgeoned the songbird to death.

But let me back up.

I first heard about Manny Howard when he was a guest on The Colbert Report.  Howard turned his Brooklyn home and yard into a farm, with the challenge to live off it for a month.

Palin's "Feminism" Restricts Women's Rights

I had a genuine question recently: In what sense is Sarah Palin a feminist?  In what sense does she work to support the rights of women?  No one was able to answer that question.  Telling, no?

I did some digging, and here is what I have learned: Sarah Palin's feminist theory has two planks:

1.    Vote Republican!
2.    Overturn Roe V. Wade and make abortion illegal

To give her credit, Palin talks a good talk.  She uses phrases like "Moms just know."  Empty meaningless jingoist phrases which may as well be hawking peanut butter or breakfast cereal.  But when you get right down to it, you've got those two things.  Vote Republican; down with abortion.
