Seventh Generation is popping up everywhere, and I’m very happy to see them. Not only do they offer eco-friendly products for my home that are usually at a decent price, they’re also hosting a campaign to raise funds for ovarian cancer research. Did you know that ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of death in women in the United States?
It’s bothered me ever since I heard—when ovarian cancer started really being talked about—that a cancer could actually be sexually transmitted. As if there weren’t already enough dangers out there to worry about, let’s add cancer to getting pregnant and contracting STDs! I’m not condoning unprotected sex—it’s certainly dangerous with or without cancer on the table—but I am saying that a sure vaccine, preventative measures, and research for ways to truly keep us safe are definitely needed.
Since September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, their new website, letstalkperiod.com, will be up for the entire month. On it, visitors can earn money for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund very easily: every time you get a friend to sign up at the site, Seventh Generation donates a dollar to the cause. It’s not as easy as those click-to-donate sites where there are a bunch of sponsors paying for your click, but it’s pretty darn close.
Letstalkperiod.com encourages young women to watch for the signs of ovarian cancer. Some risk factors include being peri or post-menopausal, a family history of the disease, and uninterrupted periods. If you have any of the symptoms of ovarian cancer, such as gastrointestinal pain, a change in bowel movements, postmenopausal vaginal bleeding, or pelvic swelling, please see your OB/GYN as soon as possible. For more information on symptoms, risk factors, and prevention, click here.
Tips about organic, safer tampons is also listed, and people who sign up can get a coupon for Seventh Generation tampons.
The goal in mind is to raise $22,000—symbolizing the 22,000 women diagnosed with the disease each year—to combat ovarian cancer. I’m betting that we can reach that goal before the end of the month! Sign up at letstalkperiod.com and pass it on to as many people as you can.
To promote the campaign on Twitter, use the hash tag #LetsTalkPeriod, and feel free to link to this article from Facebook, MySpace or your favorite social network.
You can also follow the campaign at YouTube, where they have some pretty great videos, such as the following one featuring comedian Jessica Bern:
