Christianity is a bastion of hipocrisy, conflicting messages and nonsense. Prejean should be home pregnant washing clothes for her husband according to her beliefs. But gays should not practice Christianity like blacks shouldn't be KKK members, really. Too much warm fuzzy to resist I guess.

From a Christian standpoint, this article in itself is against the Word of God, Matthew 18:15-17 "Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother."  Has the author contacted those she is judging?

Firstly, considering that it is not a private sin, but one that is indeed VERY public and offends everyone, a public response is appropriate.

Secondly, the criticism is of ALL those who participate in such offensive and sexist displays, past and future not just one particular individual.

You are simply attempting to defend your public criticism of an idividual however this argument is not valid  "go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone."  The Bible does not go on to say oh yeah if he did it on national tv then it's ok to speak ill of him on the internet where millions may be witness.

You need to familiarize youself with the way in which public sins were handled...recall the woman brought before the town to be stoned?  That was rather public.

And please read the verse that you are quoting yourself...it says IF the trespass is against you personally then deal with it privately first (then publicly); however, when the sin is one against society it was delt with publiclly.  I am not going to argue with you on the matter, what they are doing is wrong, plain and simple, even by their own supposed standards, and it harms women (as well as men and families) everywhere.

That is simply an example of man judging man, the only perfect judge is the Lord Himself.

Romans 14:4 "Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master hestands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand?"

1 Corinthians 4:5 "Therefore, judge nothing before the appointed time: wait till the Lord comes".

1 Corinthians 5:12 "What business are you to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside"?

Your judgement of the specific beauty queens is based on opinion, you do not know what is in their heart only the Lord knows what is in their heart as none of us know what is in your heart.  If you are truly concerned for these individuals the right thing to do is to pray for them and not condemn then, unless you are simply attempting to start controversy.  If you feel they are not true believers pray that their hearts find a path to God.  Ask others to pray for them rather than asking others to judge them.

Your lord talk is nauseating. She wants to be appreciated for her looks, like everyone else. She took it to the ultimate stage, a "BEAUTY PAGEANT".  The entire practice is vain. Your quotes are irrelevant because there are no facts or logic involved. You are simply regurgitating ancient prose.

And your Corinthians quote is rediculous: Prejean is judging people outside her church with church doctrine?? What gives her domain to do that?

And praying is the MOST POINTLESS act possible. Pray for Haiti while others GO to Haiti and actually effect change while Christians huddle by their bedsides mumbling words to themselves, hey thanks. I don't pray for lights to come on, I go turn them on. Same with humanitarian work.

Why did Kurt Warner lose the Super Bowl last year? He prayed for it, I saw him. Maybe it was because the guys on the other team prayed more, or maybe God just doesn't care for the Arizona Cardinals. The world is not as simple as your book or brain paints.

The person was saying the author is wrong for judging prejean and referring to her dressing like a $2 hooker I think, I dont think they were saying prejean was judging anybody sounded to me like they were saying the author was trying to be biblical but really acting against what they believe sorta looked like a round about way of saying the author was doing the same thing she said prejean was doing

too much anonymity here. I don't know who I'm arguing against. My point is, the Bible is not the final say, your brain is. Yes, according to a book, she is a hypocrite. That is obvious. I don't have a homophobic doctrine to follow, so its odd to even engage in debate about it.

The Bible itself conflicts on this. It's all about love and forgiveness, but much of it is full of reasons not to love people and the horrible things you should do to them if they are different. I just cannot accept a biblical quote to justify any action. It is absolutely no more a moral book than The Hobbit.

I apologize for my misunderstanding.

I'm really really tired of people quoting the Bible in English, especially those who quote the Bible as translated in the 1611 King James edition, since more often than not, they don't understand the language.

Frankly, I don't think anyone should quote any translation of the Bible in the context of making a textual argument. I've got news for you--it doesn't say what you think it says. The Leviticus 20 text for instance that's not what it says in Hebrew, and, moreover, that section of Leviticus combines two separate versions of the book--that's why there's so much duplication. Finally, that particular quotation is directed towards the Levites--not everyone, but a particular priestly caste with specific requirements for purity.

Go read this. Secondly, for her to describe themselves as Christian, and then cite the Old Testament law in defense of her idiocy, makes me wonder--is she keeping all the OT laws? I certainly hope she isn't wearing clothing of mixed fibers, and that she obeys the purity laws during her period. And, while I'm at it, I want to know Why Can't I Own a Canadian?

Yeah, you, self-proclaimed semi-literates who can't read English, never mind your own sacred texts.

So you stole your arguments from somebody else... nice...

Try to understand the concept of a citation; I know it's difficult, but if you try, I expect the neurons will coalece enough that you'll get it.

Also? Come back to me when you grow a pair of ovaries, and can read Hebrew, Koine, and Latin. Until then? You're an lilliterate fake. You're a Christian who can't read scripture. You are a self-described Christian quoting Jewish law, but YOU get to selectively pick and choose which laws are followed, and which are not. That's practically a textbook definition of a hypocrite; you know, "All Christians are equal, but some a more equal than others."

If you're a Christian who can't read scripture in the original languages (you'll note I don't specify in ms.) but feel free to castigate others in terms of scripture, then you're an uneducated, lazy hypocrite who would deny Christ if he appeared at your door—but you've got your hand out for thirty pieces of silver, because you're Anonymous.

I am not a Christian. I don't even describe myself as a Chrstian, and I know your scriptures better than you do. I also know that the central concept of Christ's teachings is this:

????? ??? ??? ??? ?????? ??? ??????? ???? ?? ????????, ????? ??? ????? ??????? ??????: ????? ??? ????? ? ????? ??? ?? ????????.

That's Mathew 7:12; if you knew Greek, you'd know what it says. It's YOUR golden rule, and you're pretty much breaking it right here.

You might want to take a look in the mirror there lady,  you are doing the very think that you are condemning me for when I pointed out that that is what these women were doing.  But it is ok for YOU to do the judging, just not anyone else?

And, I do not fall into that category because I have no problem whatsoever with being judged by the same standard which I hold everyone else to, in fact, I expect that the moral standards I expect of others be expected of me in return otherwise, what would be the point of an ethic at all?  Which is what the Bible tells us, that we are to be judged by the same law.

I could out quote you any day of the year if I were so inclined, and I am sure my knowledge of Biblical matters would apparently surpass yours given that you have been unable to apply anything that you are reading or see past single verses in isolation; however, that is NOT what this article was about and your ramblings are just a distraction and I will not even waste my time reading any further, let alone responding to them.

Despite your concept of Christian rules ruling all, they are only for believers, which isn't the majority of Americans. Christians always make the assumption that I give a spit about their rules. What about stoning adulterers to death? What about all the other BS in that book that goes ignored by 'good Christians'. Save your Bible quotes. They have little to no bearing on real life.

Christians always cite the Bible. Who cares what two loving people do. It doesn't hurt anyone except Christian feelings. But your book hurts my feelings with its prejudice, ignorance and blockage of logic. It has driven hundreds of wars, even genocide. It is one of the most violent books out there. So keep your Christian hypocricy to yourself. To be honest, American law is so specific and so massive, that to find the Bible anywhere in silly.

There are several more popular religions that DON'T preach racism/sexism. Try Buddhism.

Ultimately, Prejean chose to identify with a religious rule from an old book that many Americans don't agree with. She lost for it. So close up your ancient book and be quiet.

I will not point out your numerous errors about the Bible...and whether the majority agree with the Holy Bible or not is irrelevant....

The entire point of the article is that if these women are not going to live by the same rules that they are holding others to then they are in no position to judge.  You seem to be missing the point that the quotes were to point out their own hypocrisy, not to convert anyone else to a cause.

As a strong feminist I see absolutely nothing offensive about the Holy Bible, certainly I see much that offends coming from the churches who preach their own doctrines of hatred and claim it is from the Bible when it is not; however, I DO take great offense from the  harm caused by the sexist and degrading "contests" that these shallow and unintelligent women participate in further making women's rights a harder battle.

Wrong- what do you think the prophets did in the Old Testament? The author is totally within her rights (and responsibilities) as a follower of God to point this contradiction out. Believers don't get to pick and choose what parts of the Bible to follow, and Lev. 19:17b states: "Thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbor, and not suffer sin upon him." The point of the article, which still stands, is that you should not criticize or "go Biblical" unless you are going to hold themselves to the same standard.

OK Nikki - From WITHIN a Biblical perspective, I totally agree. I would obviously argue against using the bible as a source of morality in any case. yes there are some good ideas in there but its so laden with bad/outdated/racist/sexist messages as to be laughable as moral a guidebook. So, I agree with you, not the other Bible spewer.

Niki Fears's picture

I think it is important not to get too bogged down in the religious content that we miss the point that the whole Miss America thing in the first place is a sexist and harmful display turning women into talking barbie dolls; it is objectifying women and lending to that ridiculous idea that women are merely "eye candy" and have nothing of real substance to offer.

My problem with saying that beauty pagents are sexist is that the individual woman who is making the decision to compete, she isn't being forced.

Niki Fears's picture

I could argue that such women are not really making a free choice...I mean in a world where you are told that as a woman that is your ONLY value and your ONLY choice are such actions any longer truly a matter of real choice?

But, my main point is that exploitation of women is still exploitation whether or not one individual says they go along with it.  If you bribe someone to say that they are willing to be sold into slavery or brainwashed them into saying that they choose to be murdered for a human sacrafice, would we also say that that makes slavery and murder and human sacrafices ok just because one person "agreed" to it?

It's no surprise that a contest where a woman is being judged by the size of her boobs and the length of her legs would primarily have misinformed, Christian bimbos as it's contestants.

The moment a beauty contest becomes sexualized, for instance by parading the contestants around in bathing suits, the contest becomes immodest. The quote from the bible urges women to demonstrate virtue rather than sex or wealth. And that's the point of the audience's desire for a traditionalist answer. But you can't grow blueberries in molassus and expect sweeter berries. You'll just get dead plants.
