October 9 through 16 is Feel Your Boobies Week, a campaign run by the organization Feel Your Boobies, a nonprofit group working towards breast cancer awareness and reminding women all over the world to check their breasts once a month for lumps and abnormalities.
The founder of Feel Your Boobies, Leigh Hurst, was diagnosed with breast cancer only after she’d spotted a lump during a self-exam that her doctors had missed during a routine checkup. Since then, she’s vowed to make it her mission to make women and girls very much aware and in charge of their breast health.
Leigh’s story reminds us all that anyone can get breast cancer. Though she had no family history, was an avid runner and healthy woman, she was still diagnosed. Therefore, it’s important, Leigh maintains, to always be on the lookout as an advocate for your own health. She started her organization with the bold “Feel Your Boobies” title in order to really capture people’s attention and make the message stick.
At the Feel Your Boobies website, you can learn how to check your breasts, what to look for, and when to check. You can also help spread the word through a variety of means. Become a Facebook Fan or follow Feel Your Boobies at Twitter and help tell friends that they need to check their breasts as well. You can also make a Boobicon with your own photo that says, “Feel Your Boobies. Are You Doing It?” to use wherever you like on the web.
Right now, the campaign is also offering free stickers in honor of the third annual Feel Your Boobies Week. It’s a classic vinyl style and measures 3X5 inches—much like the free ones that MoveOn has been distributing—and works for both indoor and outdoor use.
While at the site, you can also order additional merchandise such as t-shirts, hats, tote bags, pajamas, water bottles, various sized stickers, magnets and reminder cards and postcards. You can also, of course, simply make a donation for the campaign.
So the question remains—have you checked your boobies this month? Even if you regularly visit the gynecologist, make sure that you do. Try putting a little reminder sticker on your calendar, or make a date with a friend to both feel your boobies on the same day. Remind your friends, sisters, and every female you know to do the same—it could just save a life.
