As a woman who has been pregnant, and who was drunk most of the first tri-mester of pregnancy, and who smoked cigarettes and pot for the remainder of the time, I can say that what the medical community says about those things is BS! My baby is brilliant, and happy! Ok, so she was born pre-mature and severely under weight, but I seriously doubt that my habits during pregnancy had anything to do with it.

so you think that just out of the blue your baby was born VLBW? Reason for the very  low birth rate and premature is because you smoked weed and cigs. That had EVERYTHING to do with it.

Thank you for this article! I did not find out I was pregnant until my second trimester, as I was told I would never have children and didn't have the usual symptoms. I drank pretty heavily and smoked ciggarettes up until the day I found out. I have been living in fear and feeling like a horrible person since then. I have dreams about my baby being deformed and I can't stop thinking about the baby being messed up. I am trying not to stress about this as I know stress is bad for the baby too! Thanks for giving me some hope. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to my situation? I would like to hear your stories.

As long as this syndrome is real and it's correlated with alcohol intake during pregnancy I think women should be warned about the risks. Sure a glass alcohol won't destroy your baby but it can have effects on his intrauterine development even if he won't develop the syndrome. Unfortunately we need more than a breathalyzer to control the alcohol intake, we need to change our habits during pregnancy.
